According to the 2001 Census, there are around 56,000 Ghanaians living in the UK. Data from the Ghanaian High Commission reveals that about 850,000 people coming from Ghana are in the capital.
There is not a specific geographic place that can locate the Ghanaian community in London. This is because Ghanaians are spread across London boroughs. But an important number of Ghanaians lives in the area of Tottenham, Hackney and Enfield.
Since the 16 Century, Ghanaians have been coming to London. This is because Ghana was part of the Britain colonies in Africa and many travelled to the UK in search of a better future.
Their main channel of immigration is through tourism, working permit, asylum, student visa, family visit, citizen returning and illegal means.
But living in London has been a struggle for many Ghanaians.
Especially for those who arrived to London in the 60s and 70s as their qualifications was not recognised in the UK. So, the only means of survivor was working in unskiled jobs.
Today, second and third generations of Ghanaians Londoners study to university level and contribute to the economical and social development not just in London but also in their homeland.
